EDI Bulletin
The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is a tool that helps communities to understand how well they are preparing children for Grade 1. Results can show community strengths and weaknesses in supporting their children and, therefore, can be a useful tool in assessing community gaps and assets. The EDI can be used for service planning purposes but should be used in conjunction with other data, such as Census, family, health, and community indicators. Taken together, these data provide a more complete picture of the community and the factors that can impact early child development. The EDI, developed by the Offord Centre for Child Studies at McMaster University, is a teacher-completed, community based population measure and, as such, results are reported on a group-level, such as a neighbourhood, municipality, ward or region. The EDI will be completed in Peel on a three-year cycle in the second half of the kindergarten year, to allow for teachers to get to know the children, and for children to adjust to their new school environment. For further Peelwide statistics on 2006 Census indicators, please visit the Peel Data Centre website.
