Early Development Instrument and 2006 Census by Ward Report
The Early Development Instrument and 2006 Census by Ward Report examines ward-level characteristics and supports available for children before they start school. It provides consistency of information from ward to ward and complements school-level EDI data used by the Peel District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
This report supports service and collaborative planning, many local advocacy initiatives, and funding applications foster an environment for healthy early childhood development. It presents an early framework for moving forward in planning services and programs that ensure a successful start in life for young children.
The data presented is limited to selected Census indicators. It is therefore important to consider other determinants of school readiness. When considered together, these factors form a more comprehensive equation that may explain EDI scores. The service provider tutorial (link) raises questions about the other social determinants of health that are necessary to provide the best conditions for school readiness.
In highlighting 2007 EDI data, the report sheds light on how service providers can use EDI data to plan responsive service delivery. And when studied in combination with other data (such as Census, family, health, and community indicators), the EDI data can reveal aspects of the relationship between service provision and child development outcomes. Considered together, these data provide a more complete picture of the societal, familial, and individual characteristics affecting early child development.
